Attendance: 513

By ANDY GIBBS at THE GREENE KING STADIUM

DAN Dillon's first goal for Hinckley United made it three successive home wins and was enough to overcome the stern challenge of Ilkeston Town.

Whilst the previous two home wins yielded nine goals, this single goal success would have given Dean Thomas even more pleasure, Ilkeston are a side in form – this was their first defeat since the opening day of the campaign and Dillon’s goal was the first The Robins have conceded in over 600 minutes of football, so three points for United is a measure of their recent improvement.

Lee Collins came back into the side after recovering from illness and his physical presence at the heart of the defence was a crucial factor against the strength of former Knitter Gary Ricketts who got little change out of the former Solihull man.

The first half was dominated by too many petty infringements, the game never flowed and the best of the chances fell United’s way. On the quarter hour mark, the hard-working Chukki Eribenne sent Adam Webster in behind the defence but his lob was too heavy and the ball went over the bar. As half-time approached, Neil Cartwright drilled a long range effort wide before Stuart Giddings’ deep free kick was met by Webster’s towering header that drifted narrowly wide.

Ilkeston began the second half well and United had two huge let-offs within seven minutes of each other. Sam Duncum’s well timed run sprung the offside trap and he had so much time to make up his mind where he was going to place his shot, too much time as it happened as he never looked truly confident and put his shot wide.

Moments later that rarest of occurrences – a Connor Franklin error – as his underhit backpass found David Graham on the edge of the United area, but Chris MacKenzie was alert to the danger and dived at the substitute’s feet.

The value of that save increased midway through the second half when Dillon struck. A cross from the left was half cleared by the Ilkeston defence and the loose ball was seized upon by DILLON whose sweetly struck shot from the edge of the area went through a crowd of players to nestle in the net.

One goal always seemed likely to win this closely fought game as Ilkeston heads dropped and they never looked like getting themselves back on terms in the final quarter of the game, in fact the better efforts came at the other end, notably through Andy Hall who drilled a couple of long range efforts off target but no further scoring meant a narrow, but vital victory for The Knitters.

HINCKLEY UNITED: MacKenzie, Mace, Giddings, Dillon, Collins, Franklin, Hall (West, 90), Gooding, Webster, Eribenne, Cartwright (Taylor, 58). Subs not used: Hamilton, Barker, Lancaster.
