By Andy Gibbs at The Greene King Stadium

THE GREENE King Stadium hosted its first game of the new campaign and if this match is a taste of what’s to come, then the United faithful are in for some great entertainment this season.

Honours were even and deservedly so, both sides merited some reward from a game played at a good tempo throughout, Hinckley took the lead towards the end of the first half, but the visitors levelled midway through the second.

An open game saw plenty of chances created at both ends throughout the 90 minutes as both sides got the ball down and passed it. The tone was set early on, James Mace’s right wing cross reached the unmarked Adam Webster who blazed over when he might have taken a touch to steady himself. Andy Hall then shot across the face of goal after cutting in off the right flank, before Droylsden began to impose themselves on the game. The Bloods have long been acknowledged as one of the better footballing sides in the league and they enhanced their reputation in this game, building patiently from the back and using the full width of the pitch at every opportunity, never more so than when Steve Beck’s deep cross from the right flank reached Simon Yeo who’s powerful shot was superbly turned away at his near post by Chris MacKenzie.

MacKenzie did well again on the half hour, parrying Tony Gray’s effort before diving to claim the rebound and shortly after, United went in front. Andy Gooding, who was a bundle of energy throughout, raced into the box, took the ball around Carl Ruffer who tripped him to earn a yellow card and from the resulting spot kick, Webster drove home hard and low to put his side in front.

Dean Thomas was forced into a change at half-time with Matt West being replaced by Alex Taylor, a move that disrupted United and as the visitors persisted with their neat passing game they began to get on top. They forced a couple of scrambles in Hinckley’s six yard box and during one of them, Lee Collins did well to bravely block Gray’s powerful shot before the inevitable equaliser arrived on 73 minutes. MacKenzie couldn’t claim a cross in a crowded goalmouth and when the ball squirmed from his grasp, Liam Brownhill hooked the ball home from close range.

United wasted a number of corners in the closing stages before one of the floodlight pylons went out with five minutes remaining. After a break in play, light was restored, but the momentum was taken out of the game and a point apiece was about right.
